Now fully qualified

I’m delighted to announce that in December 2017 I became a full Certified Clinical Somatics Educator. The training was spread over three years and covered the philosophy and practicalities of Hanna Somatics.

The course involved learning the clinical procedures for the three core reflexes identified by Thomas Hanna, namely the Green Light, Red Light and Trauma Reflexes. The course also covered working with clients with the upper and lower extremities so that we covered all parts of the body during the three years. These procedures use assisted pandiculations, where the practitioner provides some resistance to movements to enable the client to sense and feel more easily and then to release the muscular tension.  This tension often shows up as jumps or jerks in the release which is what Thomas Hanna called sensory motor amnesia; where the brain has lost full control over the muscles. Somatics helps you to regain that control.

As well ask the clinical techniques we also explored Thomas Hanna’s philosophy and how he came to develop Somatic Education. We also explored in depth the neurophysiological implications for the work, looking at how muscles are controlled but he brain and how different parts of the brain have different functions in controlling and releasing muscle tension.

Somatics works from the centre of the body outwards and so when working with a client it is usual to start from the centre, even though their initial concern might be elsewhere. By the time we have finished releasing habituated tensions in the centre those other problems have already disappeared or eased.

Working with clients and watching them develop a greater sense of their own bodies and habituated muscular tensions has been a rewarding experience and one which I hope to share with lots more people. So please feel free to contact me and discuss how Somatic Education could help you relieve chronic pain, move more easily and enjoy the freedom that pain free movement can give you.

Defying the myth of Ageing

I've just completed running Tom Hanna's Myth of Ageing Somatics class. We had eight very enthusiastic people who attended over 7 evening sessions at a local venue in Leamington Spa. Everyone worked extremely hard over the seven weeks with some great results. I hope to repeat the programme  in the new year. If anyone is interested get in contact with me so I can add you to the list and keep you informed of developments. Click here to see some of the comments on the feedback page.

Training Update

In February of this year (2016) I attended the third training week in York. In this week we were taught about working with the upper extremities and scoliosis.

The upper extremities covers the head, shoulder, and arms and jaw.  There are some great new movements that will help anyone suffering from neck or shoulder pain.  This can result from habituated postures, such as working at a computer or from accident, injuries or surgery. Although these movements are not taught in isolation, as they are normally linked the whole body patterns, they are really effective at relaxing tight shoulder and necks and helping you to regain full and easy movement.

The second part of this week covered scoliosis. Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine. Scoliosis can be slight with small curves, or can be much more evident so that the whole body is affected and postures can be affected in several different ways. This can result in a range of issues from back, neck and shoulder pain as well as hip, leg and foot pain. It also limits breathing due to compression of the ribs. Scoliosis can arise from habituated postures and actions, traumas, accidents or be linked to a genetic issue.  The movements taught in these sessions help to relax muscles around the spine, helping it to regain is normal shape, work with the ribs which are usually compressed due to the curvature of the spine and help people to regain a more normal posture.

This week's training has enabled me to work with a wider range of issues and problems and help more people. If I have already worked with you but would like some more sessions then please contact me to make an appointment.

If you have never had a experienced the benefits of somatics and would like to experience the effects of a clinical somatics session then do contact me to arrange an introductory session. I can be contacted on 07779 802896.

Clinical Sessions Update

In June I completed the second module of my clinical training to become a fully qualified Clinical Somatics Educator in the style of Thomas Hanna.

All three Somatic Reflexes
This means that I can now work individually with people for the Green Light, Red Light and Trauma Reflexes.  These are the three most important reflexes for Hanna Somatics.  Clinical Somatics tends to achieve much faster and more effective results than just the exercises and they can sometimes be quite dramatic.

Would you like a Clinical Session.
Up to now I have been working mainly with friends and friends of friends, but I am now being contacted by other people and I am very happy to work with them. As part of my training I need to work with people to develop my skills on a one to one basis.   I am currently offering new clients sessions at a reduced rate of £30.  A session lasts around an hour.

Whilst some people have come to 'see what Somatics is about' others have problems, sometimes of a long standing nature.  I've had some great results.  A runner who had given up due to hip pain is now running again with a much improved posture.  People with debilitating sciatica are pain free and leading active lives once more.  So if you have specific problems Somatics may be able to help you.

If you are interested in a session or need more information call me on 07779 802896 or use the contact form to email me.
