When I joined Martin’s Somatics class (February 2020 ),my left knee was very  painful.  I was using  walking poles in case it gave way and waiting to see a consultant about a possible replacement.  I never took all of the 8 paracetamols recommended by my doctor, but the knee was painful, especially going up and down stairs.

Now, after 10 months of  regular Somatic online  classes and daily exercise, I can move freely, having abandoned the sticks after a couple of months, and I rarely take paracetamol. The knee will never be perfect  but I don’t yet need a replacement. I can  put the improvement down only to the regular Somatic exercise programme, which  has also helped ongoing lower back, shoulder and neck problems all of which have improved during the recent months.

At 78, I don’t expect a miracle cure but I know that this gentle exercise programme has certainly helped me. So give it a try

I came to see Martin with Piriformis Syndrome, a sharp pain in the bottom which was limiting my ability to drive for more than 20 minutes. Physiotherapy had failed to make a difference, but Somatics is working and I can now drive for an hour. 

Co-ordination is something I struggle with, but with Martin’s sessions, his audio recordings and his written materials, I have mastered the movements. In just four sessions, I have learnt how to relax my muscles and I feel much more mobile. My daily 25 minute sessions are something I really look forward to. My rounded shoulders have opened up, I look taller, slimmer and the perennial ache, I attributed to being 58, has all but gone.

After suffering from a bad back and sciatica, experiencing chronic pain everyday and taking numerous painkillers I had a MRI scan. This showed a slipped disc impinging on the sciatic nerve!  I saw a Consultant who gave me three options; an operation on my back, a steroid injection or live with the pain! I chose the injection but unfortunately it did not reduce the pain. I didn’t want the operation but physically and mentally the pain was wearing me down and it seemed there was no alternative.

Fortunately for me a friend recommended Martin and the practice of Somatics. Although I had never heard of Somatics I contacted him and attended an introductory class session. I felt very positive afterwards and decided to pursue this further. I had four one-to-one Clinical Sessions with Martin who worked on the three core Somatic reflexes; Green Light, Red Light  and Trauma .

After each session Martin gave me feedback both verbally and by email and also sent me audios of the exercises we had done and more importantly how to execute them correctly. Between sessions I set aside time, on a daily basis, to practise the exercises.

I am now pain free! I no longer have a bad back or sciatica and I am no longer taking a concoction of painkillers to reduce the pain on a daily basis. My physical and mental  well-being has changed dramatically as a result and I feel like I’m back to being myself again. It has in some way seemed like a miracle as I had lost all sense of hope to improve my back other than to have an operation which I did not want!

Martin is very knowledgeable and experienced in Somatics.  He encourages you during the sessions and continues to give support afterwards through email and audios. This enabled me to continue the exercises, at home, knowing I was being guided in the correct manner. I am so grateful to Martin for all his help and support and I am now looking forward to a new era free of pain! I would recommend anyone experiencing pain to give Martin and Somatics a try.

I attended one of Martin’s short (7 weeks) courses, Defying the Myth of Ageing. (ideal for anyone starting with Somatics) with  7 others. His style is calm and assured, well-paced and with a good balance of general and individual tuition.  He prepared well for each lesson and followed them up with handouts and audio files.  Altogether, a very thorough and professional approach.

Having previously experienced yoga and Alexander technique exercises, I found Somatics effective and natural. I have noticed an improvement in my suppleness and a reduction in backache in the one spot that has niggled for years.

 I have no hesitation in recommending Martin to anyone who is interested in trying Somatics.

For some years I suffered with severe pain in my lower back, from a trapped sciatic nerve. This pain extended down my left leg and would develop suddenly when I was walking any distance or standing for some time. However, it could be relieved quite quickly if I sat down for a few minutes.

Recently, the effects of this condition got much worse; I was in pain as soon as I put any weight on my left leg, so I was unable to walk more than few steps without discomfort.

Gradually my condition has improved until now I can walk comfortably and climb stairs without pain. I intend to continue with the exercises, incorporating them into my daily routine, with the aim of retaining the flexibility and ease of movement which I now enjoy.

I couldn’t be more delighted with the results your exercises have produced.  (my physio was mightily impressed and immediately researched Somatics!). I also want to tell you that I found the way in which you talked me through the exercises; why I was doing each one and the benefits to be achieved, really helped me to understand and relate to what I was doing, which then encouraged me to continue.  It’s all too easy to start off with huge enthusiasm, but when results are slow, the tendency can be to feel disgruntled and give up.  However, because I understood what I was doing and why, I persevered and am now beginning to see an improvement in my flexibility and a huge reduction in the pain.  For me now, I will be incorporating the programme into my daily life.  So thank you for taking the time to give me some much needed help.

‘I went along to Martin’s back workshop having found myself getting increasingly achy, particularly in the morning on getting out of bed.  The daily exercises I learnt eased my early morning lower back pain after a matter of days.  In addition, a shoulder problem I’ve had for a couple of years has dramatically improved  – I’d begun to accept painful movement as an aging problem –  after about a year with a physiotherapist who had ultimately implied as such!  Again after a matter of days I could feel the changes – I no longer have restricted movement in that shoulder and the stabbing pains I was experiencing have gone!’

For some years I suffered with severe pain in my lower back, from a trapped sciatic nerve. This pain extended down my left leg and would develop suddenly when I was walking any distance or standing for some time. However, it could be relieved quite quickly if I sat down for a few minutes.

Recently, the effects of this condition got much worse; I was in pain as soon as I put any weight on my left leg, so I was unable to walk more than few steps without discomfort.

When Martin suggested that somatic exercises could help I was dubious, but also desperate to get some relief, so decided give them a try. Under Martin’s careful guidance and with the help of his notes and audio tapes I learnt to do the exercises which he suggested and began to practice them twice a day. The slow and careful movements are almost relaxing, as you focus on them and concentrate on their effects on your body – no sudden movements or painful jerks!

Gradually my condition has improved until now I can walk comfortably and climb stairs without pain. I intend to continue with the exercises, incorporating them into my daily routine, with the aim of retaining the flexibility and ease of movement which I now enjoy.

When I joined Martin’s Somatics class (February 2020 ),my left knee was very  painful.  I was using  walking poles in case it gave way and waiting to see a consultant about a possible replacement.  I never took all of the 8 paracetamols recommended by my doctor, but the knee was painful, especially going up and down stairs.

Now, after 10 months of  regular Somatic online  classes and daily exercise, I can move freely, having abandoned the sticks after a couple of months, and I rarely take paracetamol. The knee will never be perfect  but I don’t yet need a replacement. I can  put the improvement down only to the regular Somatic exercise programme, which  has also helped ongoing lower back, shoulder and neck problems all of which have improved during the recent months.

At 78, I don’t expect a miracle cure but I know that this gentle exercise programme has certainly helped me. So give it a try

I came to see Martin with Piriformis Syndrome, a sharp pain in the bottom which was limiting my ability to drive for more than 20 minutes. Physiotherapy had failed to make a difference, but Somatics is working and I can now drive for an hour. 

Co-ordination is something I struggle with, but with Martin’s sessions, his audio recordings and his written materials, I have mastered the movements. In just four sessions, I have learnt how to relax my muscles and I feel much more mobile. My daily 25 minute sessions are something I really look forward to. My rounded shoulders have opened up, I look taller, slimmer and the perennial ache, I attributed to being 58, has all but gone.

After suffering from a bad back and sciatica, experiencing chronic pain everyday and taking numerous painkillers I had a MRI scan. This showed a slipped disc impinging on the sciatic nerve!  I saw a Consultant who gave me three options; an operation on my back, a steroid injection or live with the pain! I chose the injection but unfortunately it did not reduce the pain. I didn’t want the operation but physically and mentally the pain was wearing me down and it seemed there was no alternative.

Fortunately for me a friend recommended Martin and the practice of Somatics. Although I had never heard of Somatics I contacted him and attended an introductory class session. I felt very positive afterwards and decided to pursue this further. I had four one-to-one Clinical Sessions with Martin who worked on the three core Somatic reflexes; Green Light, Red Light  and Trauma .

After each session Martin gave me feedback both verbally and by email and also sent me audios of the exercises we had done and more importantly how to execute them correctly. Between sessions I set aside time, on a daily basis, to practise the exercises.

I am now pain free! I no longer have a bad back or sciatica and I am no longer taking a concoction of painkillers to reduce the pain on a daily basis. My physical and mental  well-being has changed dramatically as a result and I feel like I’m back to being myself again. It has in some way seemed like a miracle as I had lost all sense of hope to improve my back other than to have an operation which I did not want!

Martin is very knowledgeable and experienced in Somatics.  He encourages you during the sessions and continues to give support afterwards through email and audios. This enabled me to continue the exercises, at home, knowing I was being guided in the correct manner. I am so grateful to Martin for all his help and support and I am now looking forward to a new era free of pain! I would recommend anyone experiencing pain to give Martin and Somatics a try.

(ideal for anyone starting with Somatics) with  7 others. His style is calm and assured, well-paced and with a good balance of general and individual tuition.  He prepared well for each lesson and followed them up with handouts and audio files.  Altogether, a very thorough and professional approach.

Having previously experienced yoga and Alexander technique exercises, I found Somatics effective and natural. I have noticed an improvement in my suppleness and a reduction in backache in the one spot that has niggled for years.

I attended one of Martin’s short (7 weeks) courses, Defying the Myth of Ageing. (ideal for anyone starting with Somatics) with  7 others. His style is calm and assured, well-paced and with a good balance of general and individual tuition.  He prepared well for each lesson and followed them up with handouts and audio files.  Altogether, a very thorough and professional approach.

Having previously experienced yoga and Alexander technique exercises, I found Somatics effective and natural. I have noticed an improvement in my suppleness and a reduction in backache in the one spot that has niggled for years.

 I have no hesitation in recommending Martin to anyone who is interested in trying Somatics.

For some years I suffered with severe pain in my lower back, from a trapped sciatic nerve. This pain extended down my left leg and would develop suddenly when I was walking any distance or standing for some time. However, it could be relieved quite quickly if I sat down for a few minutes.

Recently, the effects of this condition got much worse; I was in pain as soon as I put any weight on my left leg, so I was unable to walk more than few steps without discomfort.

When Martin suggested that somatic exercises could help I was dubious, but also desperate to get some relief, so decided give them a try. Under Martin’s careful guidance and with the help of his notes and audio tapes I learnt to do the exercises which he suggested and began to practice them twice a day. The slow and careful movements are almost relaxing, as you focus on them and concentrate on their effects on your body – no sudden movements or painful jerks!

Gradually my condition has improved until now I can walk comfortably and climb stairs without pain. I intend to continue with the exercises, incorporating them into my daily routine, with the aim of retaining the flexibility and ease of movement which I now enjoy.

Deceptively simple, I feel Somatics has given me back control over the aches and pains I have suffered over many years. I never really got on with yoga, but I just love Somatics, and feel that I will be able to continue doing the  exercises for the rest of my life. And if I forget what to do, the audio instructions will remind me.

I couldn’t be more delighted with the results your exercises have produced.  (my physio was mightily impressed and immediately researched Somatics!). I also want to tell you that I found the way in which you talked me through the exercises; why I was doing each one and the benefits to be achieved, really helped me to understand and relate to what I was doing, which then encouraged me to continue.  It’s all too easy to start off with huge enthusiasm, but when results are slow, the tendency can be to feel disgruntled and give up.  However, because I understood what I was doing and why, I persevered and am now beginning to see an improvement in my flexibility and a huge reduction in the pain.  For me now, I will be incorporating the programme into my daily life.  So thank you for taking the time to give me some much needed help.

When I joined Martin’s Somatics class (February 2020 ),my left knee was very  painful.  I was using  walking poles in case it gave way and waiting to see a consultant about a possible replacement.  I never took all of the 8 paracetamols recommended by my doctor, but the knee was painful, especially going up and down stairs.

Now, after 10 months of  regular Somatic online  classes and daily exercise, I can move freely, having abandoned the sticks after a couple of months, and I rarely take paracetamol. The knee will never be perfect  but I don’t yet need a replacement. I can  put the improvement down only to the regular Somatic exercise programme, which  has also helped ongoing lower back, shoulder and neck problems all of which have improved during the recent months.

At 78, I don’t expect a miracle cure but I know that this gentle exercise programme has certainly helped me. So give it a try

Co-ordination is something I struggle with, but with Martin’s sessions, his audio recordings and his written materials, I have mastered the movements. In just four sessions, I have learnt how to relax my muscles and I feel much more mobile. My daily 25 minute sessions are something I really look forward to. My rounded shoulders have opened up, I look taller, slimmer and the perennial ache, I attributed to being 58, has all but gone.

After suffering from a bad back and sciatica, experiencing chronic pain everyday and taking numerous painkillers I had a MRI scan. This showed a slipped disc impinging on the sciatic nerve!  I saw a Consultant who gave me three options; an operation on my back, a steroid injection or live with the pain! I chose the injection but unfortunately it did not reduce the pain. I didn’t want the operation but physically and mentally the pain was wearing me down and it seemed there was no alternative.

Fortunately for me a friend recommended Martin and the practice of Somatics. Although I had never heard of Somatics I contacted him and attended an introductory class session. I felt very positive afterwards and decided to pursue this further. I had four one-to-one Clinical Sessions with Martin who worked on the three core Somatic reflexes; Green Light, Red Light  and Trauma .

After each session Martin gave me feedback both verbally and by email and also sent me audios of the exercises we had done and more importantly how to execute them correctly. Between sessions I set aside time, on a daily basis, to practise the exercises.

I am now pain free! I no longer have a bad back or sciatica and I am no longer taking a concoction of painkillers to reduce the pain on a daily basis. My physical and mental  well-being has changed dramatically as a result and I feel like I’m back to being myself again. It has in some way seemed like a miracle as I had lost all sense of hope to improve my back other than to have an operation which I did not want!

Martin is very knowledgeable and experienced in Somatics.  He encourages you during the sessions and continues to give support afterwards through email and audios. This enabled me to continue the exercises, at home, knowing I was being guided in the correct manner.
